Welcome to the Kingston Doula Collective site! We offer support to women and families in Kingston ON and surrounding areas. We are passionate about providing women and families in the area with care and support throughout pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Each one of us strives to provide the best support possible for our clients. We each work individually with our clients, but also provide backup support so that no woman who wants a doula goes without one. We strongly suggest that women meet with a backup doula during one of their prenatal visits with their primary doula to ensure comfort and compatibility.

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional that provides continuous labour support for birthing mothers and their partners. Having the support of a doula has been shown to shorten the length of labour, reduce the need for a c-section or other interventions, decrease the need for medication and increase the mother's satisfaction with the birth experience.

A Birth Doula

Provides physical and emotional support during birth and is a supporter of a mother's birth choices. She stays with the mother throughout the entire labour and gives information to the mother's partner to help them provide effective labour support, which allows them to participate at their comfort level. A birth doula supports a mother's birth preferences and respects the clients' privacy and life experiences

A Postpartum Doula

Offers education, companionship and nonjudgmental support during the postpartum fourth trimester. Assists with newborn care and family adjustment (this can include meal preparation and light household tidying at the request of the mother). Offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing and coping skills for new parents and makes appropriate referrals when necessary

What a doula does not do:

A doula does NOT provide medical care or clinical tasks and does not make decisions for the mother. A doula does not replace a father/partner during the birth process.
